Who says ruinpubs don’t make contributions to the (parts of the) city! The best example is Szimpla Kert and its neighborhood, quickly filling up with tourists in the summer. We have mentioned Blue Horse, a ’clothpub’; right next to that, there is Amber Minor (Kis Parázs), a thai restaurant; and our newest discovery opened next door to the classic ruinpub of the Szimpla Kert, and it is called El Rapido.
El Rapido is a cross between a flea market, a Mexican pub, a café, a delicatessen, and God knows what else.
Upstairs is the territory of culinary pleasures: while your burrito, taco or quesadilla is prepared fresh, in front of your eyes, you can browse the sauces, tequilas, Hungarian wines by the glass or by bottle; and when you grabbed your well-deserved food and/or drink and head downstairs, you have the feeling you are having coffee in a junkyard.
The signs and price tags in the display cases tell you that everything is for sale here, and in this case, ’everything’ can be taken literally. There are mugs, toys familiar from our childhood, but you’ll also find bags, accessories, gadgets from our grandparents’ time.
All in all, El Rapido is a crazy place. And what’s even better: on weekdays, it’s open until 3 a.m., on weekends until 4 a.m., and it also serves alcohol by the bottle, at retail price, even after 11 p.m. It’s a good place to pop in to after a good bender in Szimpla kert. Or before that. Or during.
